Oxygen is the key to life, we were taught this as children. So you may wonder why every time we talk about longevity or fighting aging, we use the term antioxidants. Because oxygen, essential to life, to the point that all our (vital) functions are interrupted without it, can also cause irreversible damage to our cells. That's right.
Oxygen gives life, but it can also take it away.
It almost seems like a paradox. In fact it is a paradox, which in biology and biochemistry is called the “oxygen paradox”.
In our body, good oxygen (O2) reaches every cell of the body with every breath. Once inside the cell, the biochemical reaction of “cellular respiration” begins. During this reaction, new oxygen molecules are produced, “oxygen free radicals (OR)”, i.e. bad oxygen . These particular oxygen molecules, highly unstable and reactive, attack all the surrounding cells with which they come into contact.
In all living organisms there is a delicate balance between the production of free radicals and their elimination by antioxidant defense systems. The disruption of this balance, referred to as “oxidative stress,” causes the onset of cellular lesions that, if serious and prolonged over time, lead to an acceleration of the aging process and the onset of numerous diseases.
The causes of increased production of free radicals are varied: pollution, lifestyle and incorrect diet, alcohol, smoking, inappropriate physical exercise, psycho-emotional stress, diseases, traumas, inflammations, infections, vasculopathies, neoplasms, drug therapy. The level of aging is therefore linked to the natural balance between the quantity of oxygen free radicals produced and antioxidant defenses.
Antioxidants inhibit the damaging effect of oxygen free radicals on all cells and thus reduce the aging process .
Powellnux is a powerful natural antioxidant as demonstrated by published studies.
